MACBAN Calls for Justice and Enhanced Security Amid Rising Herdsmen-Violence in Plateau.

The Plateau State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has issued a strong warning to local militia groups, specifically the Berom and Mangu militias, condemning their ongoing attacks on herders and their cattle. In a statement signed by Chairman Alhaji Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, MACBAN expressed deep concern over the increasing violence, which has resulted in the loss of over 2,000 cows and more than 100 herdsmen since the start of the year.

Babayo accused these militia groups of deliberately attacking herders and stealing their cattle, particularly in areas such as Riyom, Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, Jos East, Bassa, and Mangu local government areas. While some have believed that Fulani bandits are responsible for these attacks, Babayo clarified that investigations reveal most of these assaults are carried out by local militia gangs rather than organized bandit groups. These groups not only kill herders and their livestock but also engage in cattle theft, exacerbating tensions in the region.

A recent incident in Bangai Village, Riyom, was highlighted as an example. Babayo detailed that on August 26, 2026, a herder named Alhaji Jeji Abdullahi was ambushed by Berom militants, resulting in the death of 21 cows. The attack, which occurred around 1:00 pm, was condemned by MACBAN as a brutal and unlawful act that further destroys the livelihoods of innocent pastoralists.

Babayo emphasized that livestock farming is the primary source of income for many Fulani families, and such attacks threaten not only their economic stability but also peace and social harmony. Despite numerous appeals for restraint and justice, attacks persist, heightening tensions between herders and local communities, and undermining efforts at reconciliation.

In response, MACBAN declared that it would no longer remain passive. The organization warned that it would take action, including seeking justice both within Nigeria and internationally, to ensure accountability. They called on the Plateau State government, security agencies, and law enforcement bodies—including the Inspector-General of Police, the Commander of Operation Safe Haven, and the Department of State Services (DSS)—to investigate the attacks, identify those responsible, and prosecute them according to the law.

Furthermore, MACBAN urged authorities to enhance security measures around vulnerable pastoral and grazing areas to prevent future violence. They also appealed to the Fulani community to remain peaceful and law-abiding while cooperating with security agencies. The association reiterated its stance that the ongoing destruction of innocent herders’ lives and property must come to an end, emphasizing that justice and peace in Plateau State depend on decisive action against these militias.
