NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Chinese Counterfeiters Operating in Nigeria
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised concerns over the growing activities of counterfeiters operating within Nigeria, saying some Chinese nationals involved in counterfeiting have established local production and distribution networks.
NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Dr Martins Iluyomade, disclosed this in Lagos on Monday while responding to questions from The PUNCH.
Iluyomade said recent investigations showed that some counterfeiters who previously operated from outside Nigeria now have operations and logistics channels within the country. According to him, some of the operators identify products in Nigeria, arrange for counterfeit versions to be produced in China and subsequently distribute them in the Nigerian market.
He added that NAFDAC had identified and shut down some logistics companies allegedly linked to the movement of counterfeit products.
The agency has continued to intensify enforcement against fake, substandard and unregistered regulated products across the country. NAFDAC’s concerns come amid ongoing efforts to curb the circulation of counterfeit goods that pose risks to consumers and legitimate businesses.
