Nigerian Govt Vows to Punish Those Involved in Bobrisky Bribery Scandal

The Nigerian Government has pledged to take action against individuals involved in the alleged bribery scandal surrounding Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky. Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made this vow during a press briefing marking his one-year anniversary in office in Abuja.

The controversy began when reports emerged that Bobrisky, who was sentenced to prison earlier this year, did not serve his term inside the correctional center. This sparked concerns about corruption within the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

To address these concerns, Dr. Tunji-Ojo ordered a comprehensive investigation into bribery and corruption within the NCoS. Several senior prison officers were subsequently suspended on September 26, 2024, including Michael Anugwa and Sikiru Adekunle, both Deputy Controllers of Corrections in Lagos.

Additionally, ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna was suspended for allegedly accompanying a convicted inmate outside the facility, while Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu was suspended for allegedly receiving money on behalf of an inmate.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo assured Nigerians that the investigation will be thorough and impartial. “We will not spare anybody no matter how highly placed,” he stated. The minister emphasized that the investigation will go beyond the allegations involving Bobrisky.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo further expressed confidence in the investigation committee, assuring Nigerians of the integrity of its members.
