The Young Progressives Party, YPP, and the BOOT Party in Ogun State have rejected claims that they have withdrawn their legal challenge against the governorship candidacy of the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate, Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi.The two parties made their position known on Monday during a joint press conference in Abeokuta, where their state chairmen, Solomon Adeyemi of the YPP and Abiodun Akerele of the BOOT Party, described the claim as misleading.
Their reaction followed a statement by Adeola’s media adviser, Chief Kayode Odunaro, who had announced that several major court cases challenging the senator’s 2027 governorship candidacy had been discontinued by the litigants.
According to the party chairmen, however, neither of them authorised or consented to the withdrawal, compromise or discontinuance of the legal proceedings. They said they were neither contacted nor informed before the alleged discontinuance was made public.Akerele, speaking on behalf of both parties, maintained that the issues surrounding Adeola’s eligibility, constitutional requirements, state of origin and political participation should be determined through appropriate judicial and constitutional processes.
He stressed that a political statement could not determine the status of a court case, arguing that only official court records and lawful processes filed before the court could establish whether a suit had been withdrawn.
The parties also denied any suggestion that the alleged discontinuance meant they had become satisfied with Adeola’s candidacy or decided to support his political ambition.
They further raised concerns about alleged intimidation, surveillance and the presence of unfamiliar individuals around persons connected to the legal matter. The parties said they had reported their concerns to security authorities and urged relevant agencies to investigate any credible threats.
The YPP and BOOT also appealed to President Bola Tinubu, as national leader of the APC, to caution Adeola and members of his political circle against what they described as misrepresentation, intimidation and undue pressure.
They stressed that political competition ahead of the 2027 election should not degenerate into threats or violence, insisting that their legal concerns would continue to be pursued through peaceful and lawful means.
Responding, Odunaro said his earlier statement was based on official court documents and notices of discontinuance filed by the lawyers representing the parties. He maintained that copies of the notices were served on the defendants.
Odunaro also dismissed allegations linking Adeola to any threats against the parties, saying the senator had no personal dispute with them and would not engage in criminal acts.He added that the security agencies could investigate the allegations and establish their veracity.
