Oshoala Calls for Nigerian Support as Super Falcons Face South Africa in Crucial World Cup Play-Off
Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala has called on Nigerians to rally behind the team as they face South Africa on Thursday in a crucial play-off for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria’s route to automatic World Cup qualification was ended after the Falcons suffered a 1–0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday. The defeat ended their hopes of securing a direct World Cup ticket through the tournament’s quarter-final route.
The Falcons must now navigate the play-off route, with the winners of the African play-in matches advancing to the FIFA Intercontinental Play-Off Tournament for another opportunity to qualify for the 2027 World Cup.
Oshoala urged Nigerians to continue supporting the team, stressing that a World Cup place remains at stake.
“The only thing I can say right now is we need their support. The World Cup ticket is at stake, so this is the time when we really need everyone to support the team,” she said.
Nigeria will face South Africa on Thursday, August 13, with the match scheduled for Stade Moulay Rachid in Casablanca.
With Nigeria’s long-standing record of qualifying for every Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991 now under pressure, the Super Falcons will need a victory over South Africa to keep their 2027 World Cup hopes alive.
