PDP Faction Nominates Goodluck Jonathan as 2027 Presidential Candidate in Absentia
A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Turaki has adopted former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The nomination was ratified on Saturday at a special national convention held at the faction’s secretariat in Area 10, Garki, Abuja.
Although Jonathan was absent from the convention, his certificate of return was received on his behalf by Fred Agbedi, a member of the House of Representatives representing Bayelsa State.
The convention was initially scheduled to hold at the A-Class Park and Event Centre in Abuja but was relocated after the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) warned hotel and event centre operators against hosting political groups not recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Security operatives reportedly blocked access roads leading to the original venue on Saturday morning, prompting organisers to move the event to the party’s office, where proceedings were successfully concluded.
Party officials said a date for the formal presentation of the PDP presidential flag to Jonathan would be announced in the coming weeks.
INEC currently recognises the PDP leadership aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
As of the time of filing this report, Jonathan has not publicly responded to the nomination or indicated whether he will accept the candidature.
The former president, who governed Nigeria from 2010 to 2015, has been linked to several presidential comeback speculations since leaving office but has yet to make any definitive declaration regarding a future bid.
If he eventually joins the race, Jonathan could face contenders including President Bola Tinubu of the APC, Omoyele Sowore of the AAC, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is associated with the ADC.
