Tinubu Celebrates Obasanjo at 89, Hails His Towering Influence

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 89th birthday, praising his enduring contributions to Nigeria’s development and his influence across Africa.
The President’s message was contained in a statement issued by his spokesman, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday in Abuja.
In the statement, Tinubu described Obasanjo as an elder statesman whose leadership and commitment to national development have continued to shape the country’s political and democratic landscape.
He noted that Obasanjo played significant roles in Nigeria’s history, first as military Head of State between 1976 and 1979 and later as a democratically elected president from 1999 to 2007.
Tinubu said the former leader’s decision to hand over power to a civilian government in 1979 remains a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The president added that Obasanjo’s “towering influence” extends beyond Nigeria to the African continent and the global stage, noting that the elder statesman continues to contribute to discussions on governance, peace, and development.
He also acknowledged Obasanjo’s time in prison for opposing military rule and his efforts in advancing Africa’s political and economic interests.
“As Chief Obasanjo turns 89, we recognise the zeal and wisdom he continues to bring to Nigeria’s development,” Tinubu said.
Tinubu also prayed for continued good health, strength and wisdom for the former leader as he celebrates his 89th birthday.
