Tragic Death of 16-Year-Old Nigerian in UK Lake Rescue
The body of Valentine Ikechukwu, a 16-year-old Nigerian resident of the UK, has been recovered after drowning at Colwick Country Park on April 30. The teenager was swimming in the lake when he encountered difficulties, prompting an urgent multi-agency rescue effort.
According to Nottinghamshire Police, emergency services responded to the scene around 5:20 pm after Valentine got into trouble while swimming. A coordinated rescue operation was launched, involving police underwater search teams and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. His body was found shortly before 8 pm.
Police Detective Inspector Gail Routledge expressed condolences and support for the family, stating, “This was a tragic loss of a young life. Our thoughts are with Valentine’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.” She also emphasized the dangers of open water, warning against swimming in such areas regardless of intent.
Valentine’s family described him as a kind and well-behaved young man, deeply loved by those around him. They stated, “Long live Valentine, forever 16. He was a former Nottingham College student and was well-liked among his friends. Words cannot describe our grief. We ask for privacy to grieve and come to terms with our loss. He will be forever missed.”
Authorities confirmed that Valentine’s death is not being treated as suspicious, and a report is being prepared for the Coroner.
