In the aftermath of the dramatic UEFA Champions League clash between Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid, UEFA has issued an official statement clarifying the decision to disallow Julián Álvarez’s penalty.
Atlético de Madrid had reached out to UEFA for an explanation regarding the incident, which saw Álvarez’s goal chalked off after VAR intervention. UEFA confirmed that the disallowance was based on a technical infringement—Álvarez inadvertently made contact with the ball using his standing foot before striking it.
“Although minimal, the player made contact with the ball using his standing foot before kicking it, as shown in the attached video clip. Under the current rule (Laws of the Game, Law 14.1), the VAR had to call the referee signalling that the goal should be disallowed,” UEFA’s statement read.
However, UEFA acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting that the contact was clearly unintentional. The governing body revealed that it would initiate discussions with FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to explore whether the rule should be adjusted in cases involving accidental double touches.
The incident has sparked widespread debate among fans and pundits, raising questions about the rigidity of current football regulations and the role of VAR in critical match moments.
