Temitope Olowo, a 32-year-old man, has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for attempted robbery in Lagos, Nigeria. Olowo was arraigned on November 9, 2018, on a three-count charge bordering on armed robbery, but he pleaded not guilty.

The trial commenced and the prosecution counsel, Olayemi Shofolu, called two witnesses. However, Olowo was found guilty of attempted robbery and sentenced to 14 years in prison by Justice Modupe Nicol-Clay, of the Lagos State High Court.

Before handing down the verdict, the Judge asked the convict if he understood the terms of the plea bargain or if he was coaxed into entering into the agreement. Justice Nicol-Clay, therefore, said: “I have considered the plea of the defendant, the defendant is guilty of attempted robbery.

The defendant understands that the Lagos State Judiciary sentencing guidelines practice directions of 2018 are applicable.” She added that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, and the defendant was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment with the sentence commencing from the day the defendant was first remanded in custody.

The Lagos State Prosecutor, Mrs T.O. Olanrewaju-Daudu, had earlier said that Olowo was arrested for attempting to rob a woman of her bag containing valuable items. According to her, the defendant was caught in the act and was apprehended by passersby who handed him over to the police. Olowo’s sentencing serves as a warning to others who may be considering engaging in criminal activities.
