The South-west Development Commission bill initiated by former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has passed the first reading at the Senate. The bill seeks to establish a commission that will receive and manage funds from the federal government to address infrastructural and ecological challenges in the South-west region, which includes Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti states. The establishment of this commission would ensure the development of the region.

According to Senator Daniel, who is the current member representing Ogun East at the National Assembly, the establishment of the commission is long overdue and would be in the best interest of the South-west region and Nigeria as a whole. The bill has received support from other senators from the region who are co-sponsors of the initiative.

Nigeria already has development commissions for the Niger Delta and the Northeast. The South-west Development Commission bill would ensure that the South-west region gets its fair share of funds from the federal government for infrastructural and ecological development. The bill is expected to pass second and third readings at the Senate before it can be signed into law by the President.
