Over 600 Drug Users Arrested, 81 Convicted in Ogun

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) revealed that a total of 605 individuals involved in drug-related activities were apprehended in Ogun State throughout 2023, marking a significant effort in combating drug abuse and trafficking in the region.

Ibiba Odili, the State Commander of NDLEA, disclosed this information during a press briefing in Abeokuta, shedding light on the agency’s concerted efforts to address the issue.

Of the 605 arrests made, 497 were male while 108 were female, reflecting the diverse demographics affected by drug abuse and trafficking. Odili stressed the importance of adopting a holistic approach towards individuals grappling with drug addiction, emphasizing that they require assistance, treatment, support, and rehabilitation rather than mere punishment. Drawing from international best practices, Odili highlighted that drug users are considered individuals suffering from a chronic brain disorder, underscoring the need for compassion and intervention to help them overcome their struggles.

Furthermore, Odili underscored the agency’s commitment to not only apprehending offenders but also facilitating their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
