Chinese National Sentenced to Death for Killing Nigerian Girlfriend

A Kano-based High Court handed down a death sentence by hanging to Chinese national, Frank Geng-Quangrong, 47, for fatally stabbing his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani, 22.

 

Resident at Kano Railway quarters, Geng-Quangrong, faced conviction on one count charge of culpable homicide. Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji delivered the verdict, stating, “The defendant’s testimony is inconsistent. I hereby find him guilty.”

 

Prosecution counsel, Attorney-General of Kano State, Haruna Dederi, detailed the offense, which occurred on September 16, 2022, at Janbulo Quarters Kano. Geng-Quangrong stabbed Sani with a knife in her home, leading to her death at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano.

 

The defendant pleaded not guilty during the trial, where the prosecution presented six witnesses and four exhibits. Defence counsel, Muhummad Dan’azumi, called the defendant and one witness, presenting five exhibits and requesting a prerogative of mercy under Section 313 of ACJL.

 

Geng-Quangrong claimed self-defense, stating, “I didn’t kill Ummulkhulsum intentionally but stabbed her in self-defense after she grabbed my testicles.” He appealed for leniency.

 

The victim’s mother, Hajiya Fatima Zubairu, expressed satisfaction with the death sentence, deeming it a deterrent for future offenders.
