Pension Dispute: Ogun Workers Call Off Strike Following Interventions
Ogun State workers on Tuesday suspended their week-long strike over the non-remittance of N82 billion in contributory pension deductions accumulated over 14 years.
The workers had earlier raised concerns about the state government’s planned implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) from July 1, as outlined in the amended 2013 law. They argued that the move posed a serious risk to their future, citing the government’s failure to remit deductions from their monthly salaries to the Pension Fund Administrators.
In a communiqué jointly signed by the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Hameed-Benco Ademola; the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Akeem Lasisi; and the Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), Isa Olude, among others, the organised labour announced the decision to suspend the strike.
They explained that the suspension was to allow time for the implementation of agreed actions outlined in the recently signed Memorandum of Action.
It said the interventions of paramount rulers, national leaderships of various unions, and labour veterans both at home and abroad played pivotal roles in shaping the course of the struggle.
In light of these developments, and consideration of the temporary agreements reached with the government, Labour resolved to suspend the strike.
“The agreement is taken as a demonstration of commitment by the state government. We are poised to also give close monitoring of their pledges,” it said.
Labour leaders emphasized that while the strike has been suspended, the struggle is far from over.
They urged workers across Ogun State to remain resolute, vigilant, and committed to the cause, encouraging them to uphold unity and trust in the government’s commitment to fulfilling the terms of the agreement.
The unions also expressed deep appreciation to the entire workforce for their resilience, steadfast solidarity, and determination throughout the duration of the strike.
