Southwest states announce public holiday for Isese Festival
Governments across the South-West have declared today (Wednesday) a public holiday for civil servants in celebration of this year’s Isese Festival — a day dedicated to honoring Yoruba culture, spirituality, and indigenous traditions.
In Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, through a circular issued by the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, stated that the holiday reflects the state’s commitment to its cultural policy.
“In line with the State Government’s resolve to promote our indigenous culture and traditions, preserve our heritage, and support traditional institutions, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved Wednesday, August 20, 2025, as a work-free day for all public servants in Lagos State in commemoration of Isese Day,” the circular read. Normal work activities will resume on Thursday, August 21.
Similarly, the Ogun State Government, in a statement signed by Governor Dapo Abiodun’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, confirmed the holiday. He noted that the formal recognition of Isese Day began in 2023, following a resolution passed by the State House of Assembly.
“Isese Day serves as an opportunity for adherents of the Yoruba religion to honour their ancestors, engage in traditional practices, and promote the values and teachings inherent in their spiritual beliefs. The celebration not only fosters a sense of community among practitioners but also invites the broader society to appreciate and respect the rich cultural tapestry that the Yoruba tradition contributes to Nigeria,” Akinmade said.
In Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde approved the holiday “to allow traditional religion worshippers and other residents of the state to mark the occasion,” according to a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo.
Makinde urged residents to use the day as a time of reflection and prayer. “His Excellency has therefore requested that the occasion be used to pray for the peace, unity and stability of the state in particular, and the country in general,” the statement read.
Osun State also declared Wednesday a public holiday. In a statement, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Abdul Rasheed Aderibigbe, explained that Governor Ademola Adeleke’s approval of the holiday underscores his commitment to preserving and celebrating the cultural heritage of the people.
“The Executive Governor of Osun State, Senator (Dr.) Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, extends warm greetings to practitioners of the traditional religion and wishes them a joyous and memorable Isese Festival,” Aderibigbe noted, while calling on celebrants to uphold peace and show respect for others during the celebrations.
Isese Day, now formally observed in several South-West states, has become a yearly expression of Yoruba cultural identity and inclusiveness, with increasing advocacy for its recognition across Nigeria.
