FG launches portal to monitor teachers across the country
On Monday, the Federal Government launched a digital portal aimed at creating a reliable database of Nigerian teachers, simplifying the licensing process, and strengthening professionalism in the education sector.
The platform, introduced in Abuja by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria in collaboration with the UK-funded Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria programme, is expected to transform teacher management nationwide.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, described the initiative as a turning point for the sector.
“Today, we are not just launching a portal, we are ushering in a new era — one where technology, innovation, and efficiency drive teacher professionalism in our country,” she said.
She explained that the portal would enable seamless registration and licensing of teachers, provide a transparent database of qualified professionals, give real-time access to professional development opportunities, and strengthen accountability in the education sector.
“In an increasingly digital world, where knowledge travels at the speed of light and nations are competing through ideas, skills and creativity, Nigeria cannot afford to remain behind. To build the future we dream of, we must embrace the tools of the 21st century,” she added.
Also speaking, Senior Education Adviser at the British High Commission, Ian Attfield, said the UK government was delighted to support the project, stressing that teachers must be adequately trained and motivated.
“There are many categories of teachers — from community teachers to volunteers in faith-based schools, as well as those in low-cost private institutions. A significant number of them are either underqualified or not qualified at all.
Because of this diversity, the systems must be integrated, efficient, and well-motivated,” Attfield noted.
He further assured that the UK government, through its Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, remains committed to supporting Nigeria’s education reforms.
