The Federal Government has cautioned that teachers who are not certified by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) will not be allowed to practice.
To strengthen this directive, the Ministry of Education has repositioned both the TRCN and the National Teachers’ Institute to boost professionalism in the teaching sector and raise the standard of education across the country.
According to a press statement posted on its official X account on Sunday, the ministry redefined the duties of the two agencies while making TRCN registration compulsory for all teachers.
The ministry stated that the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) will henceforth focus on in-service training and community-based professional development, while the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) will be responsible for licensing and regulating teachers across the country.
Unveiling the new framework, Education Minister Dr. Maruf Alausa highlighted guidelines for both agencies, which cover teacher registration, professional growth, compliance monitoring, welfare, and curriculum standards.
He stated: “Only teachers with TRCN registration and licensing will be allowed to stand before Nigerian classrooms. This ensures every child receives competent and professional instruction.
“This reform is built on results and sustainability. Our children will learn from the best, be prepared for the best, and supported by the best. It is Renewed Hope in practice.”
On Thursday, the minister cautioned secondary schools to ensure their teachers are duly certified, stressing that uncertified schools would no longer qualify as examination centres.
He further announced that from 2027, accreditation of public and private schools to host examinations such as WASSCE, NABTEB, NECO, and NBIAS would depend strictly on teachers’ TRCN certification.
