Atiku and Obi: The Strongest Opposition Ticket for Nigeria’s 2027 Elections.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi are poised to form the most formidable opposition ticket against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections, according to Demola Olarewaju, Special Assistant on Digital Media Strategy to Atiku Abubakar. Speaking on the “Mic On Podcast,” Olarewaju suggested that a partnership between Atiku and Obi could create a “co-presidency” scenario, allowing Nigerians to benefit from the combined ideas and leadership styles of both leaders.Olarewaju emphasized that such a partnership could present a united front, strengthening the opposition. “I think the best bet would be to have the two of them on that ticket and give Nigerians this sort of sense of co-presidency,” he said. He also praised Atiku’s political resilience, highlighting his history of supporting party candidates even after losing primaries. Olarewaju recounted how Atiku lost the 2011 PDP primaries to Goodluck Jonathan but still worked tirelessly for him, successfully delivering Adamawa State in the election.

The discussion also touched on youth participation in Nigerian politics. Olarewaju noted that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) plans to reserve between 35 and 50 percent of its positions for young people and women, emphasizing the importance of empowering the younger generation. “Nigerians deserve a party that recognizes the strength of young people, Gen Z, Gen Alpha, even, and harnesses their potential,” he stated.Regarding leadership succession, Olarewaju acknowledged Atiku’s willingness to step aside for a younger candidate if he is defeated in primaries. However, he maintained that Atiku remains the strongest opposition candidate. He concluded that a partnership between Atiku and Obi, given their similar political ideologies, would be strategically advantageous and could deliver a compelling opposition to Tinubu in 2027.
