BREAKING: May Agbamuche-Mbu Takes Over as Acting INEC Chairman — October 7, 2025

May Agbamuche-Mbu, a National Commissioner at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has officially assumed office as the Acting Chairman of the Commission.
Her appointment comes following the formal handover of responsibilities by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who is proceeding on terminal leave after years of steering the nation’s electoral body through multiple election cycles.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held at INEC headquarters in Abuja. The session also served as Agbamuche-Mbu’s first official engagement in her new capacity, where she reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to transparency, electoral integrity, and continuous reforms ahead of future polls.
Agbamuche-Mbu, a seasoned legal practitioner and long-serving INEC National Commissioner, represents the South-South geopolitical zone. She is expected to oversee the Commission’s operations and ensure a smooth leadership transition as preparations intensify for upcoming off-cycle and general elections.
