The Abia State government has issued a four-week ultimatum to landlords in Umuahia to renovate their dilapidated buildings or face government action. The directive aims to improve the city’s aesthetic appeal, which has been marred by neglected and dirty structures, according to officials. The government emphasized that many buildings have not been maintained or given a facelift for years, contributing to urban decay and undermining efforts to beautify the capital city.
In addition to the building renovation mandate, the Abia State government announced a crackdown on illegal structures, including shanties and unauthorized projections in Umuahia. The Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) has been instructed to demolish these illegal structures within the coming days to restore order and enhance city aesthetics.
Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed these measures during a briefing following an executive council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti. He expressed concern over the state of urban decay, highlighting that the neglect of building maintenance has set back the government’s beautification initiatives. Kanu warned landlords that failure to comply with the renovation directive would result in consequences, though specific sanctions were not detailed.
Furthermore, the government announced a significant boost to the healthcare sector, revealing the employment of 649 medical personnel, including 432 nurses and one neurosurgeon. This move aims to strengthen the state’s healthcare system and improve service delivery to residents.
The combined efforts reflect the government’s focus on urban renewal and health sector development, emphasizing a commitment to transforming Umuahia into a cleaner, more attractive city and improving healthcare services for its citizens. Landlords are advised to act swiftly to avoid penalties, while illegal structures are expected to be cleared soon, marking a proactive approach by the Abia State authorities.
