Dangote Refinery Raises Concern Over Rising Petrol Imports

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has raised concerns over the rising volume of imported petrol into Nigeria, saying the development is making production planning and inventory management more difficult.
The refinery said continued petrol imports and the issuance of import licences have increased competition for locally refined products and could result in more surplus products being exported.
The concern follows the latest data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), which showed that petrol imports increased by 8.8 per cent to 19.7 million litres per day in July 2026, from 18.1 million litres per day in June.
The data also showed that domestic petrol supply fell by 20.6 per cent to 25.8 million litres per day in July, while total petrol supply declined by 10 per cent to 45.5 million litres per day. Imported petrol accounted for about 43.3 per cent of total supply during the month.
NMDPRA data further showed that Dangote Refinery produced an average of 25.9 million litres of petrol per day in July and supplied about 25.8 million litres per day to the domestic market.
Dangote Refinery said the increased presence of imported petrol could affect its inventory management and potentially lead to greater exports of products that are not absorbed by the domestic market.
