Ogun Government Issues Fresh Flood Alert, Warns Vulnerable Communities

The Ogun State Government has issued a fresh flood alert ahead of the second phase of the 2026 rainy season, urging residents in vulnerable communities to remain vigilant and relocate to safer areas where necessary.

The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said the warning followed the latest forecast by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which indicates that Ogun is among states expected to experience heavy rainfall.

According to the forecast cited by the commissioner, the second phase of the rainy season is expected to commence in September, with Ogun projected to record average rainfall of about 360mm during the month.

Oresanya warned that prolonged rainfall, possible controlled overflow from Oyan Dam and tidal fluctuations could increase the risk of river and coastal flooding by slowing the flow of the Ogun River and temporarily saturating wetlands and floodplains.

Residents in areas including Isheri, Arepo, Mawere, Magboro, Akute and Warewa, as well as parts of Abeokuta, were advised to remain alert and move to safer locations where necessary.

The state government said it would continue monitoring weather and hydrological conditions in collaboration with NiMet, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency and other relevant agencies to minimise the impact of possible flooding.
