World Bank to Support Nigeria’s Power Tariff and Subsidy Reforms

The World Bank Group says it will support reforms to Nigeria’s electricity tariff and subsidy frameworks as part of efforts to restore financial sustainability in the power sector.

The commitment is contained in the World Bank Group’s Country Partnership Framework for Nigeria for FY2026–FY2032, which was disclosed in June 2026. The framework outlines the Bank’s strategic priorities for supporting Nigeria over the six-year period.

According to the framework, the World Bank Group will support measures to improve electricity access and reliability for households and businesses through both on-grid and off-grid solutions, in line with Nigeria’s Mission 300 targets.

It also plans to support reforms covering electricity tariff and subsidy arrangements, competitive investment planning and sector regulation, with the broader objective of creating a financially sustainable power market.

The World Bank has identified Nigeria as having the world’s largest electricity access deficit in absolute terms, with more than 86 million people without access to electricity, based on 2022 data.
