Oyo Declares October 5 Work-Free Day for Teachers.
The Oyo State Government has declared Monday, October 5, 2026, a work-free day for teachers across the state to mark this year’s World Teachers’ Day.
The directive was announced in a circular issued on Sunday by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musibau Babatunde. A statement from Governor Seyi Makinde’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, said the decision reflected the administration’s commitment to teachers’ welfare and professional development.
The statement described teachers as central to the state’s education system and important contributors to human capital development.
“The work-free day is intended to provide teachers with the opportunity to fully participate in activities organised to celebrate their contributions, reflect on progress within the education sector and strengthen unity within the teaching community,” it said.
The government congratulated teachers on the occasion and reaffirmed its commitment to policies and programmes aimed at improving teaching and learning throughout Oyo State.
World Teachers’ Day is observed annually to recognise educators’ contributions and highlight issues affecting the teaching profession. The state government’s declaration will allow teachers to take part in celebrations and related activities without their usual work commitments.
Oyo is not the only state to announce a day off for teachers this year. The governments of Kwara and Ekiti also declared Monday, October 5, a work-free day for teachers in connection with the celebration.
The announcements recognise the role teachers play in educating students and supporting the development of communities. In Oyo, the government said its decision formed part of broader efforts to promote teachers’ dignity, welfare and professional growth.
The statement did not provide details of the activities planned for teachers in the state.
