Motorboy Dies as Trailer Rams Into Ditch in Ogun State

A motorboy was killed and three people, including a truck driver, were injured when a cement-laden trailer crashed at Mile 6, Ajebo Road, in Ogun State on Wednesday.

The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. near Agbedejobi village in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, according to Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE).

Akinbiyi said the trailer reportedly suffered brake failure while descending a bridge. The driver lost control while trying to avoid a car ahead, sending the vehicle into a ditch and then onto a railway track. The trailer’s cement load spilled into a nearby bush.

“One of the motorboys lost his life on the spot, while another had a broken arm,” Akinbiyi said. The driver and the trailer’s fourth occupant sustained injuries of varying severity.

TRACE officials and police officers took part in the rescue operation. The deceased and injured victims were transported to the General Hospital, Ijaiye, in Abeokuta, for further medical attention.

Akinbiyi expressed condolences to the families of those affected and urged motorists to check that their vehicles are in good condition before travelling. He also warned drivers against overloading, citing the risks associated with poorly maintained or overloaded vehicles.

The crash comes a day after two men were injured in a separate tanker accident in Lagos. The tanker, which was reportedly carrying about 33,000 litres of diesel, fell from Otedola Bridge and caught fire beneath it.

Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, said preliminary findings indicated that the tanker fell from the bridge before bursting into flames. The two men suffered second- and third-degree burns and were taken to hospital.

Authorities have not disclosed further details about the condition of those injured in the Ogun crash.
