Anglican Primate Ndukuba Raises Concern Over Debt, Insecurity, Hardship at Ikenne Synod

The 15th General Synod of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) opened on Wednesday at Our Saviour’s Anglican Church, Ikenne-Remo, with the Primate of All Nigeria, Archbishop Henry Ndukuba, raising concerns over Nigeria’s debt burden, insecurity, corruption and persistent economic hardship.

In his address, Ndukuba acknowledged improvements in some economic indicators but stressed that such gains should translate into better living conditions for ordinary Nigerians. He said economic recovery would have greater meaning when its benefits are reflected in the lives of households facing poverty and rising living costs.

The Primate also expressed concern over Nigeria’s public debt and the growing cost of servicing it. He identified corruption, insecurity, drug trafficking and cultism among challenges affecting the country’s development, while calling for greater fiscal discipline and productive investment.

Ndukuba urged the government to ensure that borrowed funds are directed towards productive projects capable of strengthening the economy, increasing revenue and improving citizens’ welfare.

The General Synod, hosted by the Diocese of Remo, is holding from September 14 to 18, 2026, under the theme, “The Priesthood of All Believers: Equipping God’s People for the Work of Ministry.”
