Dangote Acquires 4,000 Machines for 1.4m bpd Refinery Expansion
Dangote Industries Limited has acquired an additional 4,000 pieces of construction equipment as part of efforts to expand its Lekki refinery to a capacity of 1.4 million barrels of crude oil per day.
The Group Vice President, Oil and Gas and Fertiliser, Devakumar Edwin, disclosed this on Friday during a briefing with journalists who toured the refinery in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.
Edwin said the latest acquisition has increased Dangote’s construction equipment fleet to about 6,500 machines, including 330 cranes. He explained that the company had earlier acquired 2,563 pieces of equipment during the construction of the existing refinery.
According to him, Dangote decided to build and maintain its own equipment fleet after determining that relying heavily on foreign contractors would significantly increase the cost of the project.
The refinery, which currently has a reported refining capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, is being expanded to 1.4 million barrels per day. Dangote’s official refinery website also lists the 1.4-million-barrel-per-day expansion as part of the facility’s development plan.
Edwin said infrastructure and equipment already developed for the first phase of the refinery would also support the expansion, helping to reduce additional construction costs and time.
The latest equipment acquisition signals the continued progression of the refinery’s expansion project, which is expected to significantly increase Dangote’s refining capacity and strengthen its ability to supply refined petroleum products to domestic and international markets.
