Demolition Looms: Awolowo Market Traders Demand Extension of Relocation Deadline.

Traders at Awolowo Market in Sagamu, Ogun State, have expressed concern over a four-day ultimatum reportedly issued by the local government to vacate their shops ahead of a planned demolition scheduled for Wednesday morning.

The development reportedly followed a visit by local government officials to the market on Saturday, September 26, 2026, during which traders were informed of plans to demolish the existing shops and reconstruct the market into a modern commercial facility.

Some of the traders, however, said they were surprised by the announcement, claiming that they had not received prior notice or been adequately consulted before the directive was issued.

While acknowledging the need for development, the affected traders said their major concern was the short period given to them to evacuate their businesses and relocate their goods.

One of the traders said the planned redevelopment was not the problem, but the four-day deadline was insufficient for business owners who had large quantities of goods and needed alternative locations to continue their activities.

“We are not against the government building a new market. That is development, and we support it. Our concern is the four-day ultimatum. It is too short. How do you expect us to pack our goods and find another place to continue our businesses within four days?” the trader said.

Another trader appealed to the authorities to consider the economic implications of the proposed demolition, noting that the market serves as a major source of livelihood for many families.

“Where are we supposed to go? This market is our livelihood. They should give us more time to relocate peacefully,” the trader said.

The traders are calling on the Ogun State Government, Sagamu Local Government authorities, human rights organisations and other relevant stakeholders to intervene in the matter.

They are appealing for an extension of the relocation deadline, adequate consultation and, where applicable, appropriate arrangements for affected traders before the demolition exercise.

The traders also urged the local government to reconsider the proposed Wednesday demolition and engage representatives of the market community in dialogue to establish a realistic relocation timeline.

They said such engagement would allow them to move their goods and businesses without unnecessary losses while also supporting the government’s plan to redevelop the market.

The situation has generated concern among affected traders, who are awaiting further communication from the authorities regarding the planned demolition and possible relocation arrangements.
