Fernandez Responds to Criticism After Slow Rangers Start
Super Eagles and Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez has responded to criticism of his performances at the start of the 2026/27 season, saying he remains focused on improving rather than dwelling on outside comments.
Fernandez joined Rangers from Peterborough United in 2025 and enjoyed a strong debut campaign. His performances earned him Rangers’ Men’s Player of the Year award, while he was also named in the PFA Scotland Premiership Team of the Year.
However, the 25-year-old defender has faced scrutiny during the new campaign, particularly after Rangers’ disappointing European qualification campaign. The Scottish side suffered defeats to Jagiellonia Białystok and Jablonec and ultimately failed to secure European football.
Fernandez acknowledged that there are areas of his game that require improvement but said he is concentrating on developing as a player. He also stressed the importance of maintaining concentration during matches and limiting the opportunities Rangers give their opponents.
Despite the difficult start, Fernandez believes Rangers can still have a successful domestic campaign. The club has since shown signs of improvement in the Scottish Premiership, with the defender expressing confidence in the team’s growing togetherness and potential under manager Derek McInnes.
Fernandez will now look to regain his best form as Rangers continue their domestic campaign, with the defender determined to respond to criticism through his performances on the pitch.
