First Lady Remi Tinubu Defends Senate Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations
Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs. Remi Tinubu, has spoken out in defense of the 10th Senate following allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Addressing journalists ahead of International Women’s Day (IWD), Mrs. Tinubu insisted that the Senate remains a “mature” institution that deserves respect. She downplayed concerns about the handling of the allegations, asserting that lawmakers were “doing what is needful.”
“I know with what is going on in the Senate, people may wonder why I’m not taking an opposing stance. But I believe the Senate is handling matters as it should. It is an esteemed and mature institution that should not be dragged into controversy,” she stated.
Reflecting on her 12-year tenure as a senator, Mrs. Tinubu encouraged Nigerian women to assert themselves in leadership. “Women must uplift themselves and ensure they are not spoken to inappropriately. You can always shut down such behavior before it even begins,” she advised.
