Former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has died at the age of 71, according to a statement issued by his family on Monday.

The former governor reportedly died on the morning of 19 October. The family announced his death in a statement signed by Toju Anire Uduaghan, describing his passing as a profound loss to the family and the people of Delta State.

The statement paid tribute to Uduaghan’s years of public service, describing him as a respected elder whose life and work touched people across the state and beyond. The family also expressed gratitude for his life and prayed for comfort for those mourning him.

Uduaghan served as governor of Delta State, in Nigeria’s oil-producing Niger Delta region, from 2007 to 2015. He completed two terms in office after succeeding James Ibori.

Before becoming governor, he served as the state’s commissioner for health between 1999 and 2003. He later became Secretary to the State Government, a position he held from 2003 to 2007.

A medical doctor by training, Uduaghan entered politics after working in the health sector and became a prominent figure in Delta State’s political leadership.

His eight years as governor coincided with continuing debates over infrastructure, healthcare provision and the development of communities in the oil-producing state.

The family described his death as a significant loss to Delta State and Nigeria. Details of his funeral arrangements and the cause of death had not been disclosed in the reports reviewed as of Monday.

Uduaghan’s death is expected to prompt tributes from political associates, former colleagues and residents of Delta State.
