Motorcyclist Dies After Robbers Allegedly Sever Ear in Lagos

A motorcyclist identified as Mohammed has died after suspected robbers allegedly attacked him with a machete in the Baiyeku area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday evening when the assailants entered Mohammed’s shop and attempted to rob him. Mohammed, who also provided phone-charging services, sustained severe injuries, including the loss of one of his ears.

A community source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the suspects had allegedly operated elsewhere in the neighbourhood before entering Mohammed’s shop as they were leaving the area.

“Mohammed used to charge phones for people. On the night of the incident, the robbers entered his shop and attempted to rob him. They attacked him with a machete and cut off his ear in the process,” the source said.

Mohammed was taken to hospital for treatment but reportedly died on Monday morning. The source added that other people were also injured in a separate incident in another part of the community, where the suspects were believed to have struck earlier.

A police source confirmed that the matter had been reported to the station and said an investigation was under way. The source said investigators were examining whether the attack was connected to a cult-related incident reported in the area that same evening.

“The incident was reported at our station, and we are aware of it. Although we suspect it was carried out by cultists because of a cult-related incident in the area that same evening, which we are still investigating, we are looking into the matter,” the police source said.

The police source did not provide further details about the suspected attackers or say whether any arrests had been made.

When contacted, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Abimbola Adebisi said she was unaware of the incident and would respond after making inquiries. She had not provided a further comment by the time the report was filed.

The attack has raised concern among residents of Baiyeku, particularly following reports of other casualties in the neighbourhood. Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incidents and the identity of those responsible.

Authorities have yet to publicly confirm the motive for the attack. The connection between the robbery allegation and the suspected cult-related incident remains under investigation.
