Government College Ibadan Installs Broadband for 2,250 Students and Staff.
Government College Ibadan has installed campus-wide broadband infrastructure through a partnership between its Old Boys Association and Nigerian technology company ipNX Nigeria Limited.
The project will provide more than 2,250 students and staff with internet access, supporting teaching, learning, research and school administration. It includes a fibre-optic backbone linking 29 buildings and wireless connectivity within each building.
The initiative was highlighted at the Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association’s 2026 Lagos Branch Annual Luncheon, according to a statement made available on Monday. The association’s North America branch led the partnership, while ipNX is delivering the project as part of its corporate social responsibility programme.
The installation forms part of ipNX’s broader effort to improve education by providing free broadband to public secondary schools within areas covered by its network.
GCIOBA President Wale Babalakin said the project reflected the association’s commitment to preparing students to compete internationally. He described Government College Ibadan as an institution known for academic achievement, professional competence and discipline, adding that preserving its reputation required equipping current students for the future.
“We are committed to ensuring that every student who passes through these gates has access to the opportunities, tools and learning environment needed to compete globally,” Babalakin said. He added that the partnership was an investment in the school and future generations, rather than simply an infrastructure project.
ipNX Group Managing Director Ejovi Aror said reliable digital infrastructure had become essential to education. He said the collaboration would give students access to technology and connectivity needed to learn, innovate and succeed in an increasingly digital world.
Aror added that the project was intended to create an environment for collaboration and innovation, as well as improve learning outcomes—not merely provide internet access.
The luncheon also featured posthumous merit awards for two former students: Dr Burian Carew, of the 1955 set, and Dr Blackie Aror, of the 1946 set. The awards recognised their contributions to Nigeria’s technology and education sectors.
Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Ejovi Aror thanked the association for honouring their legacies. He said the recognition underscored how achievement could be measured by service and the lasting impact people have on others.
Aror described both men as exceptional figures who demonstrated that excellence, integrity and service could influence industries, institutions and generations. He also recalled Carew as an early mentor in his professional life and spoke of his personal connection to his father, Dr Blackie Aror.
