Gunmen Abduct Motorists on Ogun’s Ikenne–Odogbolu Road

Residents and property owners in Ikenne and Odogbolu, Ogun State, have been left anxious after gunmen suspected to be kidnappers abducted motorists on the Ikenne–Odogbolu road on Monday afternoon.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 5 p.m. on a stretch of road that is often used as an alternative route when traffic builds up on the busy Sagamu–Ore–Benin Expressway. The road was described as partially deserted at the time.

A video shared online by an eyewitness showed two vehicles abandoned at the scene: a gold Toyota Sienna, registration number APP 901 HK, and a blue Toyota RAV4. The vehicles were reportedly driven by their owners. According to information gathered by Leadership, the Sienna’s engine was still running when police officers and other members of the public arrived, while the abductors had already fled with their victims.

The motorist who filmed the incident said he escaped by leaving his vehicle and running into nearby bushland after seeing the abduction take place close to him. Another eyewitness, who spoke to the newspaper on Tuesday evening, said three people were taken. However, the identities and number of victims had not been officially confirmed at the time of the report.

Police officers, reportedly led by the Divisional Police Officer responsible for Odogbolu, joined local security groups and the police Anti-Kidnapping Squad to respond to the incident. The teams were said to be coordinating a search for the victims and pursuing the suspects.

The abduction has heightened concern among people living and working in the two communities, particularly because the route is used by motorists seeking to avoid congestion on the expressway.

Ogun State Police Command spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi was contacted for comment and said he would respond. He had not done so by the time the report was filed.

Authorities had not announced any arrests or confirmed that the victims had been rescued. The police and security teams were continuing efforts to locate those abducted and bring the suspected perpetrators to justice.

The incident has renewed calls for greater attention to security on less-travelled roads, which can leave motorists exposed, especially when they are used as detours during heavy traffic. For now, residents and road users are awaiting official updates from the police as the search continues.
