The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a transparent and credible gubernatorial election in Osun State scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026. INEC’s leadership assured political parties, civil society organizations, the media, and the residents of Osun that all necessary preparations have been finalized to ensure the election is free, fair, inclusive, and transparent.

In a statement issued recently, INEC emphasized its readiness to conduct the poll, underscoring its dedication to upholding the integrity of the electoral process. The commission reassured stakeholders that all measures are in place to facilitate a smooth and peaceful election, fostering confidence among voters and political actors alike.

Meanwhile, security measures have been heightened in Osun State to maintain order and prevent any disruptions during the election period. The Nigeria Police Force announced that movement in and out of Osun will be restricted starting from midnight on Friday, a move aimed at ensuring a secure environment ahead of the voting day. The restriction covers major border routes leading into the state, with the Nigerian Army expected to enforce the closure by blocking entry points. This coordinated effort is part of a broader security strategy to prevent the infiltration of troublemakers and maintain peace throughout the electoral process.

According to CSP Anietie Iniedu, the Force Public Relations Officer, the restriction is designed to only allow essential movements. Individuals carrying out critical duties, security personnel on operational assignments, and voters traveling to exercise their civic rights will be permitted to move during this period. The police are thus prioritizing security and order, aiming to mitigate any potential risks that could undermine the credibility of the election.

Iniedu further explained that these security arrangements are part of an extensive plan to preemptively address possible threats and ensure that the election proceeds peacefully. The deployment of security forces at key entry points into Osun State is intended to prevent the entry of individuals who might attempt to cause disturbances or incite violence during the voting process.
