Labour Party Issues 48-Hour Ultimatum to Peter Obi to Resign from the Party
The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has given a 48-hour ultimatum to the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, demanding that he formally resign from the party. This follows his decision to align with the opposition coalition platform recently unveiled by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Obi was officially presented on Wednesday as one of the prominent political figures backing the new ADC-led alliance aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
However, in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, dismissed the coalition as a group of “power mongers” and accused Obi of maintaining divided political loyalties.
“We are aware that Peter Obi has been holding secret meetings with some of our members, persuading them to join him in his new political arrangement. Fortunately, several of them have declined to follow him,” Ifoh said.
He reiterated that the Labour Party has no affiliation with the coalition and warned that the party will not tolerate members who pursue “dual agendas” or hide behind “deceptive personas.”
“Labour Party has repeatedly stated it is not part of the coalition. Therefore, any member involved in the alliance is given 48 hours to resign formally from the party,” he concluded.
Ifoh dismissed the “new Nigeria” mantra often echoed by Obi and his supporters as deceptive and unachievable under what he described as “recycled, desperate, and frustrated politicians.”
He stated that nearly 70 percent of Nigeria’s population consists of young people who are eager to break away from the old political order. According to him, the vision of a new Nigeria can only be achieved through the Labour Party.
The party’s spokesperson also called on members to remain steadfast in their loyalty, emphasizing that the Abure-led leadership remains dedicated to building a truly progressive and youth-focused political movement.
Peter Obi recently aligned with several prominent political figures—including Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, Rauf Aregbesola, and others—under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform to establish what observers are calling a major third-force coalition ahead of the 2027 general election.
At the formal unveiling of the coalition on Wednesday, former Senate President David Mark and former Minister Rauf Aregbesola were announced as interim chairman and secretary, respectively.
