Manchester United Appoint Michael Carrick as Permanent Head Coach on Two-Year Deal
Manchester United have officially confirmed the appointment of club legend Michael Carrick as their permanent head coach on a two-year deal.
The 44-year-old stepped in as interim manager following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim in January and has since transformed the club’s fortunes with an impressive run of results.
Carrick guided United to Champions League qualification and secured a guaranteed third-place finish in the Premier League after Sunday’s dramatic victory over Nottingham Forest.
Since taking charge on January 13, Carrick has won 11 of his 16 matches and earned a place on the six-man shortlist for the Premier League Manager of the Season award. No team in the division has collected more points than Manchester United’s 36 during that period.
Speaking after his appointment was confirmed, Carrick expressed pride in leading the club where he spent over a decade as a player.
“From the moment I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United. Carrying the responsibility of leading this special football club fills me with immense pride,” he said.
“Over the past five months, the players have shown resilience, unity and determination. Now it’s time for us to move forward together with ambition and purpose. Manchester United and our supporters deserve to compete for the biggest honours again.”
United had struggled earlier in the season under Amorim, with disappointing performances and reported disagreements over tactics and formation contributing to the Portuguese coach’s exit after 14 months in charge.
Carrick, who also briefly managed the club following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021, has received praise for both his tactical approach and leadership behind the scenes.
During his playing career at Manchester United, Carrick won five Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup across 12 successful years at Old Trafford.
