NPC Chairman Aminu Yusuf Wushishi Dies at 66 After Brief Illness

The Chairman of the National Population Commission, Dr Aminu Yusuf Wushishi, has died at the age of 66.

Wushishi reportedly died in Abuja on Friday following a brief illness, barely eight months after he assumed office as the substantive chairman of the commission.

His death was announced by the National Population Commission, which described his passing as a major loss to the organisation and the country.

Wushishi, also known as the Talban Wushishi, was sworn in as the eighth substantive chairman of the commission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on December 3, 2025.

Since assuming office, he had been involved in efforts to reposition the commission and strengthen its capacity to carry out its responsibilities, particularly in population management and census-related activities.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, expressed sadness over the development, describing the death as a painful loss to Nigeria.

Wushishi’s death comes at a significant period for the NPC as the commission continues preparations and institutional work towards producing reliable population data for national planning and development.
