Sagamu Communities Urge Authorities to Address Rising Security Fears

Sagamu Communities Urge Authorities to Address Rising Security Fears

Residents of Igbepa, Araromi, Ewuga and the Back Stadium area are calling for stronger security, saying repeated attacks have left communities fearful and unsafe.

Residents in several parts of Sagamu say a spate of armed robberies is disrupting daily life and leaving many afraid to move around after dark.

Accounts from residents indicate that Igbepa, Araromi, Ewuga and the Back Stadium area have been affected. They allege that armed attackers have broken into homes and businesses, taking cash and valuables, and in some cases assaulting victims.

“We are tired of this,” a resident of Araromi said, requesting anonymity. “People are afraid to go out at night, and even during the day, we are not safe. The robbers come with guns and machetes. We are begging the government and the police to help us.”

An Ewuga resident described the situation as unbearable, alleging that criminals had become increasingly bold and that reports to police had not brought a reassuring response.

Residents in Igbepa also voiced concern about what they described as a lack of visible security patrols. One resident said people no longer felt protected and feared that attackers were carrying firearms.

Fresh incidents have reportedly added to those concerns. Residents said an attack occurred in Araromi, beyond the Police College, while another incident had been reported in Igbepa two days earlier. In that attack, robbers allegedly entered about four houses and abducted one person, who reportedly escaped.

A separate robbery was reported in the Back Stadium area. According to eyewitness accounts, attackers took mobile phones from people who had stayed overnight at a venue after an event. Packs of meat prepared for an event the following day were also reportedly stolen.

“It’s getting worse by the day. We are tired of crying. When will this end?” one distressed resident asked.

The reports could not be independently verified, and no official response from police was included in residents’ accounts.

The recurring incidents have prompted some residents to consider moving away, while others have discussed forming local vigilante groups. They say such efforts are constrained by limited resources and fears of reprisals.

Residents say the robberies are adding to wider concerns about crime in Sagamu, including cult-related violence and motorcycle theft. They have urged the Sagamu Youth Association to work with community leaders and authorities to address the security situation.

Residents are calling on the Ogun State Police Command and Sagamu Local Government Council to increase patrols, deploy more personnel to affected areas and strengthen community policing. They say coordinated action involving law enforcement, traditional and community leaders, youth groups and local authorities is needed to restore public confidence and improve safety.
