States Generate N113.94bn From Road Taxes in Three Years — NBS

Nigeria’s 36 states generated a combined N113.94 billion from road taxes between 2023 and 2025, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The figures contained in the NBS Internally Generated Revenue at State Level 2025 report showed that the states generated N40.14 billion in 2023, while collections dropped to N23.92 billion in 2024 before rising significantly to N49.88 billion in 2025.

The data indicate that road-tax revenue declined by about 40.4 per cent between 2023 and 2024, representing a reduction of approximately N16.22 billion within the period.

However, collections recorded a sharp recovery in 2025, increasing by about N25.96 billion, or 108.5 per cent, compared with the previous year.

The NBS figures also show that Lagos recorded N16.74 billion in road-tax revenue in 2023 and N16.87 billion in 2025, placing the state among the major contributors to road-tax collections during the period.

The absence of a reported road-tax figure for Lagos in the 2024 data had a significant effect on the overall national figure for that year. However, the available NBS data do not state why the Lagos figure was not reported for 2024.

Road tax forms part of the internally generated revenue collected by state governments and is associated with levies imposed on road users, particularly commercial transport operators.

The substantial increase recorded in 2025 therefore lifted the three-year combined collection to N113.94 billion, despite the notable decline recorded a year earlier.

The figures highlight fluctuations in road-tax revenue across the states and show that 2025 recorded the highest annual collection within the three-year period covered by the NBS report.
