Tinubu Orders Investigation Into Fatal NAF Aircraft Crash in Ondo

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Nigerian Air Force to immediately investigate the cause of the Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ondo State.

The ATR-42 aircraft crashed near a naval base in the Igbokoda area while on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos. It had 25 passengers and seven crew members on board.

Following the incident, the President expressed sadness over the loss of the Air Force personnel and directed that a thorough investigation be conducted to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash and help prevent a recurrence.

The Nigerian Air Force had earlier activated search-and-rescue operations in coordination with relevant authorities and emergency agencies. The cause of the accident has not been officially established.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has also indicated its readiness to provide technical assistance, including support for the recovery and analysis of the aircraft’s flight data and cockpit voice recordings, if formally invited by the military.

The incident has prompted renewed attention to aviation safety within the military, while investigators are expected to examine the aircraft’s condition, flight records, weather conditions, maintenance history and other relevant factors.

President Tinubu has also declared a three-day national mourning period for the Air Force personnel who died in the crash and directed that national flags be flown at half-mast in their honour.
