Organised by 76 Cycling Club Abuja Roadies, the inaugural competition attracted professional and recreational cyclists from Nigeria and abroad. The race was sanctioned by the Cycling Federation of Nigeria and conducted under the rules of the Union Cycliste Internationale, the sport’s international governing body.
The event also featured recreational categories for male and female participants, broadening opportunities for cyclists outside the professional ranks.
One notable participant was Ian Atfield, a British High Commission staff member who completed the race using a recumbent handcycle.
According to reports on the event, the professional winners shared a prize purse exceeding ₦6 million.
The Cycling Federation of Nigeria has expressed support for developing the competition into a national championship, which could create further opportunities for Nigerian cyclists to compete and earn international ranking points.
The organisers have indicated plans to make Ride Abuja an annual event, with the aim of promoting cycling and supporting the development of the sport in Nigeria.
