AS Roma has officially sacked head coach Jose Mourinho after a challenging run of results that saw the Giallorossi secure just one victory in their last six Serie A matches.

Mourinho, in his third season with the club, faced increasing pressure as Roma sat in the ninth position in the league. The decision comes following their elimination from the Coppa Italia by city rivals Lazio, coupled with Mourinho’s recent comparison of himself to Harry Potter, expressing the heightened expectations from fans.

The decision to part ways with Mourinho, who guided Roma to the Europa League final last season, comes as a response to the team’s struggle in Serie A. The Giallorossi currently lag behind 22 points from league leaders Inter Milan, prompting the club to make an immediate change for the benefit of its future prospects.

In a statement, AS Roma expressed gratitude to Mourinho for his passion and efforts during his tenure. The club acknowledged the memorable moments created under his leadership but emphasized the necessity of an immediate change. Mourinho’s contract, originally set to expire in June, has been terminated, marking the end of his two-and-a-half-year spell with Roma.

“We would like to thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club. We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club. We wish Jose and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours,” stated the club.

Roma’s next challenge is to host Verona, currently in the 18th position in Serie A, on Saturday. The club aims to navigate a new direction with the hope of improving its standings and performance in the league.
