Lagos State Shuts Down Unregistered Traditional Birth Attendant Centres
The Lagos State Traditional Medicine Board (LSTMB) has taken decisive action by sealing two traditional birth attendant facilities that violated practice regulations. The enforcement operation, aimed at combating non-compliance with the code of conduct for traditional medicine practice in the state, resulted in the closure of facilities located at No. 58, Willoughby Street, Ebute-Metta, and 12, Ogunnaike Street, Agege.
Mrs. Adams Aisha, who led the LSTMB’s inspectorate team during the operation, emphasized that the facilities were closed to safeguard public health and safety in the state. The inspectorate team collaborated with the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps to ensure a swift and effective response to protect the well-being of residents.
Speaking on the board’s commitment, Adams stated that the operation is rooted in creating a structured Traditional Medicine practice that is respected, standardized, documented, modernized, and protected. The ongoing initiatives and clampdowns aim to protect the public from unscrupulous traditional medicine practitioners.
In response to the enforcement actions, Adams urged practitioners and the public to collaborate in upholding the best standards while prioritizing the well-being of patients seeking treatments.
This move comes after the Lagos government announced intentions to impose sanctions on traditional medical practitioners who fail to register their businesses with the traditional medicine board. The Registrar of LSTMB, Babatunde Adele, emphasized the need for practitioners to regularize their registration by visiting the agency’s head office before February 6, 2024.
