Tinubu and Governors Agree on State Police Amidst Insecurity Concerns

In a bid to address the escalating insecurity in Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu and state governors have reached a consensus to establish state police. This decision emerged from an emergency meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where the President, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike discussed economic challenges and the surge in insecurity.
President Tinubu approved the creation of a committee, comprising state governors and federal representatives, tasked with exploring modalities for the establishment of state police. The move is a significant development considering the rising security concerns across the nation.
During the meeting, the President and governors also deliberated on enhancing the numerical strength of forest rangers, emphasizing the need for proper training to secure forests and borders effectively. The discussion comes in the wake of increased criminal activities in such areas.
In response to food-related challenges, the President directed security chiefs, including the National Security Adviser, DSS Director-General, and the Inspector-General of Police, to crack down on those hoarding food commodities. The focus is on ensuring food availability and preventing speculators from exploiting the situation.
The economic downturn, exacerbated by the removal of fuel subsidies, has led to protests and increased hardships. In response, the President has given approval for the release of about 102,000 metric tons of assorted items, including rice and maize, to alleviate the situation.
The meeting included governors from various states, such as Ekiti, Delta, Borno, Lagos, Kwara, Nasarawa, Edo, Yobe, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Plateau, Kaduna, Sokoto, Niger, Taraba, Adamawa, Cross River, Ogun, and Enugu. President Tinubu expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to collaborating with state governments and the National Assembly to establish mechanisms for state police.
Additionally, the President urged governors to focus on livestock development, enhance food production, clear salary arrears, and gratuities for workers. Emphasizing the need to create economic opportunities for youths, Tinubu highlighted the importance of addressing hoarding issues within states.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, conveyed that far-reaching decisions were made during the meeting. These include the consideration of state police, cracking down on food hoarders, and promoting food security to counter temporary difficulties in the economy.
As the nation grapples with security and economic challenges, President Tinubu and state governors aim to foster collaboration and implement measures that prioritize the well-being of Nigerians. The President anticipates further discussions and joint efforts to address the multifaceted issues affecting the country.
