Presidency Clarifies NLC President’s Arrest

The Presidency has shed light on the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, by the Department of State Services (DSS) at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

According to Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Ajaero’s disregard for a law enforcement agency’s invitation contributed to his detention.

The arrest has sparked controversy, with the Trade Union Congress in the United Kingdom making false claims about human rights abuses in Nigeria. However, Onanuga emphasized that Ajaero’s actions have consequences, stating, “No one is above the law in Nigeria, and that includes the NLC President.”

The Presidency maintains that Ajaero snubbed an invitation by security operatives, which is a serious offense. “Mr. Ajaero probably considers himself above the law,” Onanuga said. “We are not aware of any country where trade union leaders can flagrantly ignore the invitation or summons of law enforcement agencies.”

The Presidency rejects accusations of human rights violations in Nigeria, stating that the accusations are unfounded and based on a misunderstanding of the situation.

In a statement, Onanuga said, “We have a pro-democracy activist president who will do everything to ensure that the rights of all citizens are protected.” He added that the government is committed to protecting civil liberties and citizens’ rights.

The government has consistently shown readiness to engage with labour, despite political partisanship. Onanuga noted that while labour unions and the government may not always agree on policy direction, the government remains open to engagement.
