Amaechi Mourns Buhari, Says Nigeria Has Lost a True Democrat
Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has expressed his condolences on the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing Nigeria’s loss as that of a true democrat.
Buhari passed away on Sunday afternoon at a hospital in London at the age of 82.
Amaechi praised the late president as a detribalised gentleman who passionately opposed corruption and was a man of his word.
The former Rivers State Governor made these remarks in a statement released on Monday.
He expressed shock at Buhari’s passing, noting that he was an epitome of humility.
The statement reads, “I have been in deep shock since the dastardly news of the death of my boss and former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, broke out on Sunday afternoon, July 13, 2025.
“Needless to say, Nigeria has lost a true democrat, a detribalised gentleman whose passion for the betterment of Nigeria was second to none.
As somebody who was privileged to work very closely with the former President, Buhari was an epitome of humility whose legacy and everything he stood for would find a better place in the annals of the country’s history.
“I already feel nostalgic for his steadfast dedication to Nigeria’s unity and stability. His patriotism and sincerity were truly inspiring.
“President Muhammadu Buhari was a man whose word was always his bond. Despite being a retired Army General and war veteran, he was genuinely humble. His leadership was compelling, and he had a warm sense of humor.”
Amaechi encouraged the younger generation to emulate Buhari’s modest lifestyle.
“I deeply regret his passing because future generations would have benefited greatly from his example and leadership. I urge young Nigerians to learn from his humility and unwavering integrity.
“He was a leader who passionately opposed corruption and never exploited his position for personal gain, unlike many leaders today.
“As we mourn his loss, I join millions of his admirers and well-meaning citizens worldwide in expressing heartfelt condolences to his family and all Nigerians.”
