Atiku Abubakar Resigns from the People’s Democratic Party

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the **People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing a shift in the party’s direction and “irreconcilable differences” as his reason for leaving.
In a resignation letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP, Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State, Atiku announced his immediate withdrawal from the party he helped to establish.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.”
“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life,”Atiku wrote, describing the move as “heartbreaking.”
“However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”
Atiku, who has been a central figure in Nigeria’s political landscape for over three decades, served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007 and has been the PDP’s presidential candidate in multiple elections, most recently in 2023.
As a founding member of the PDP, his resignation marks a significant development in Nigeria’s political arena, particularly as the country looks ahead to future elections.
Atiku concluded his letter by expressing gratitude for the opportunities the party had given him and extended best wishes to its leadership.
His resignation comes amid the formation of a new opposition coalition, which includes other key political figures such as Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and David Mark, working under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
