Peter Obi Accuses Tinubu of Misinforming Nigerians with False Statistics

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s economic management, accusing him of distorting facts to downplay Nigeria’s worsening economic situation.

In a statement shared on Monday via X, Obi referenced a remark Tinubu made during the 2022 presidential campaign in Delta State. At the time, the then-All Progressives Congress candidate reportedly dismissed Obi’s focus on data and statistics.

“Back in November 2022, during a campaign stop in Delta State, the APC presidential candidate—now President Tinubu—mocked another contender without mentioning his name, saying, ‘Na statistics we go chop? All I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians,’” Obi recounted.

Now two years into his 4-year tenure, Nigeria is classified as one of the hungriest nations in the world with millions of Nigerians not knowing where their next meal will come from,” he said.

Peter Obi has accused the Tinubu administration of deliberately using misleading statistics to create a false impression of economic improvement.

“President Tinubu is now bombarding Nigerians with inaccurate data—ranging from false unemployment and inflation figures to questionable GDP adjustments—all in an attempt to sugarcoat the worsening economic and living conditions,” Obi stated.

Reaffirming his position on effective leadership, he added, “Governance is not rocket science or a game of chance. As I’ve consistently said, it demands sincerity of purpose, strong character, proven competence, capacity, and compassion.”
