Ibido Community Clarifies Action Against Man Who Attacked Kabiyesi Was Community Decision, Not Monarch’s Order
The community of Negbuwa, Ibido, has taken traditional action against Mr. Oye Soremekun, the son of Chief Kayode Soremekun, a chief in the palace of Oba Negbuwa Efutide Sholomade 1, following his alleged assault on the monarch on Friday, August 15, 2025.
According to reports, the incident arose from a dispute over land ownership. Mr. Oye Omolosi was accused of selling parcels of land that belongs to the community, which he had claimed as his family inheritance. In response, Kabiyesi directed him to desist from further transactions on the land until proper findings were concluded.
However, in contrary of this directive, Mr. Oye Soremekun reportedly barged into the palace and attacked the monarch(Kabiyesi Oba Kolawole’s Negbuwa of ibido), even confronting him in his private chamber (his bedroom). The Kabiyesi was rushed to hospital as a result of the assault.
In reaction, the Ibido community enforced a traditional sanction, sealing Mr. Omolosi’s residence , a punishment consistent with Yoruba customs regarding offences against a reigning monarch.
Barrister Olalekan Abiodun, Otunba Amofin of Ibido, condemned the attack, stating that Anyone who abuses the king must face consequences. Mr Oye had the audacity to slap Kabiyesi in his own bedroom. This is not his first time of such misconduct.
Apeno of Ibido explained that the decision was rooted in culture , Tradition demands that anyone who commits such an offence must have his house tied or locked. This is not the Kabiyesi’s directive but the will of the community.
Chief Samuel Osho, Lisa of Ibido say’s ;There is a misconception that Kabiyesi ordered the punishment. That is not true ( false). It was entirely a traditional and communal decision.
Chief Mrs. Kadijat Oyekoya, Olotu Erele of Ibido, affirmed that , “We chiefs took the decision in line with tradition. Kabiyesi did not instruct us to lock the house”.
Omoba Oluwasegun, Olori Odo of Ibido, added that If such an action against the king is ignored, it may extend to the chiefs tomorrow.
Pa. Aderoju Idowu, a respected community elder, emphasized “As indigenes of Sagamu, we know that no one dares to abuse the Kabiyesi. Ibido must not abandon its cultural values”.
Other chiefs, including Chief Mrs. Hadijat Arinola Shogaolu (Alase of Ibido), Otun Balogun of Ibido, and Chief Odunayo Oredeko (Odofin of Ibido), Chief Abiodun shosanya(Olumale of Ibido) described the attack as unacceptable and reaffirmed that the action taken was purely traditional and not a directive from the monarch(Kabiyesi Oba Kolawole , Negbuwa of ibido)
Furthermore, The Ibido community has declared that the sanction imposed on Mr. Oye Omolosi was in strict adherence to Yoruba traditional law. They stressed that the dignity of the throne and the cultural heritage of Ibido must be preserved, warning that future acts of disrespect toward the Kabiyesi will not be tolerated.
